Astronaut

Transform your farm with the new milestone in milking. The Lely Astronaut is an evolution that incorporates everything we have learned during the past 25 years since we pioneered automatic milking. We took into consideration the needs of cows and our customers to create an enhanced cow- and farmer-friendly milking system.

Astronaut

The hybrid arm combines fast and accurate electrical-driven movements with the softness and the power of air for stress-free milking. The air protects the electrical system by balancing the heavy load of the arm and buffering cow kicks. The hybrid arm is silent, allowing cows to experience more rest during milking.

Cows dislike obstacles, which is why the I-flow concept offers a straight route with unhindered entrance, leading cows to their milking turn with ease. As a result, the threshold for cows to enter the robot will be lower.

A three-layer laser system delivers the most accurate teat position information and stores the data after each milking. The system’s 3D camera helps localise the cow’s position in the box, allowing the brushes and cups to find the teats with ease.

The healthier the udders, the better the milk. This is why the Astronaut is equipped with a unique brush cleaning system that removes encrusted dirt and manure around the teats and the underside of the udders, ultimately stimulating milk let-down. After cleaning the teats, the brushes are thoroughly disinfected to minimise the risk of cross-contamination.

Casey Sparks, owner and manager of Sparks Quaker Acres, values the data generated by the Lely Calm automatic calf feeders. He can track each calf’s daily milk intake, allowing him to monitor health, promote consistent growth and improve feed efficiency while reducing labor costs.

Casey Sparks learned the dairy business working alongside his father and brother on their family farm. As the farm grew to nearly 500 cows, they were faced with the decision to reinvest in the parlor or modernize. They installed five Lely Astronaut A5 robotic milking systems and two Lely Calm automatic calf feeders. The decision was made easier by the farm’s longstanding relationship with Hi-Tech Dairy Supply, Inc., which has supported the Sparks family for nearly 30 years. The Sparks love the data and the information they receive from robots. Additionally, the labor savings generated by the robots have made it possible for the farm to cover the cost of the equipment.

Launch PPS Reinventing Circular Dairy Farming

The PPS 'Reinventing Circular Dairy Farming' was launched today. In this Public Private Partnership, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, Wageningen Livestock Research, Slootsmid, Nederlands Centrum Mestverwaarding, Hanskamp and Lely are working together. The pilot project aims to research how urine can be used as a fertiliser substitute. Using urine as a manure stream can help improve the circularity of a dairy farm.

Lely celebrates 50,000th Astronaut

Maassluis, May 15 2024 - Today the 50,000th Astronaut was handed over to its new owner at the Balmoral Show in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. John Henning OBE, 37th president of the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society, was present to celebrate this momentous milestone. Since its commercial introduction in 1995, the Astronaut has revolutionized dairy farming. Currently the Astronaut milking robots milk over 2.500.000 cows daily in over 50 countries worldwide.

Lely and Acorn join hands to offset CO2 emissions

Lely is pleased to announce its partnership with Acorn. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, the company will take responsibility for all emissions from its own operations in 2023. With the purchase of the Carbon Removal Units, Lely is offsetting around 7,200 tonnes of CO2 equivalents. By doing so, the family-owned company also gives a positive impetus to making agriculture more sustainable and the Carbon Removal Units generate an additional income stream for small-scale farmers.
